Getting back to our roots I have been meaning to post about Pietra Brettkelly's recent documentary 'The Art Star and the Sudanese Twins', which was featured in Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Documentary Competition. The film focuses on Vanessa Beecroft, a contemporary artist, who is determined to adopt two children that she encounters on a trip to Sudan. Referencing the Madonna as well as colonialism in the controversial photograph that Beecroft takes with the infants, this documentary and the work of the artist has brought into question the benefit of foreign adoption as well as appropriate reactions to the genocide occurring in Sudan.
