Bastille Day

For you Francophiles out there, today is Bastille Day.  I celebrated yesterday at the annual celebration in West Hollywood Park, sipping Pastis and watching some excellent bands perform.  Funny how after massive blood shed and the upheaval of a monarchy, independence days are now an excuse to relax and be entertained.  How very bourgeois.  It's interesting to reflect on another country's  independence day because it's clear we aren't the only nation struggling with how to redefine ourselves in an era of globalization.  This article from the LA Times discusses how the French are finding it hard to celebrate Bastille Day these days.
